Help with attorneys...?

My boyfriend recently got arrested for petit theft and use of a shoplifting device in florida.. We cannot afford an attorney and I have never been in this position before and niether has he. I dont know where to start and what to do. He is out on bail but legally what do we do now if we cannot afford an attorney. He has no record besides this and would like to get this off his record. Please can someone give me advice.
